Last week we received a quote request for a sprung badminton court floor. And we have to tell you, the international badminton pros know how to protect their athletes. Elite level badminton courts are required to have sprung flooring under the players’ feet.
Sprung flooring is the gold standard for world-class badminton courts. Its unique combination of shock absorption and durability provides the ideal foundation for competitive play. Badminton facilities worldwide increasingly rely on sprung flooring to protect the health and longevity of athletes, while meeting international standards.
Badminton court flooring is sophisticated. There’s more than meets the eye.
Glancing at the badminton court, thick white lines mark the playing area. A closer look reveals the specialized texture of the court surface providing exactly the right amount of grip. But the most important part to the athletes’ health, performance and longevity is completely invisible. Beneath every pro-level badminton court is a wooden sprung floor.
Sprung floors made with veneer core wood panels provide a natural stability and shock absorption that cannot be replicated with lesser means. Common sprung floor materials like ½” OSB found at your local hardware store or ⅝” MDF used in cabinets and furniture do not provide the same combination of stability, cushioning, shock absorption and rebound as elite level sprung flooring made with the ¾” O’Mara Wood Panel. Supported by a sophisticated cushioning system, the flexibility of wood offers an added benefit not all sprung floors provide. The wood flexes when an athlete lands and then rebounds back to its original state. This rebound returns a portion of that absorbed energy back to the athlete which reduces fatigue and improves performance.
Sprung badminton court floors are necessary for world-class competition.
Elite level badminton courts are required to have wood sprung flooring under the players’ feet. While sprung badminton courts are a recommendation for informal badminton clubs and local competitions, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) mandates that Olympic and world-class competition venues provide a wooden sprung subfloor beneath the badminton court mat.
Badminton court flooring must meet specified standards of shock absorption and vertical deformation in order to be approved for use by the BWF. Since the beginning O’Mara Sprung Floors have met and exceeded these standards. With a 70% shock absorption rating and 3.9mm vertical deformation, our sprung flooring is designed for durability, high-performance and longevity.
