Matt Elliott

Matt Elliott

A native of Philadelphia, Matt Elliott started dancing at the age of 5 in a suburban Philadelphia dance studio. Growing up in the 80’s as a male dancer, he was often bullied for the fact that he chose to dance. At the age of 13, Matt finally succumbed to all the bullying and hung up his tap shoes.

Becoming very self-conscience and introverted throughout high school Matt chose to work rather than attend social activities including school dances and prom. Upon graduating high school, Matt took a job working for his father at a printing company on the second shift. Working second shift gave him the opportunity to watch late night TV, on one night after the 11 o’clock news the “Million Dollar Movie” came on, it was the Movie “TAP” with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. Watching the movie Matt had realized that he had truly missed tap dancing and almost instantly his passion was reignited. A pair of shoes were purchased and what was supposed to be a hobby turned into a second career over the next 12 years.

Through social network Matt has been able to build an impressive reputation and professional relationships with some of the leading tap dancers seen on stage and screen worldwide which has made him a recognizable face in the tap dance community. Most recently, Matt was one of ten people worldwide invited to participate in Tap Dance Freedom, a week long intensive held in New York City and was also awarded a partial scholarship.

He is a teacher brand ambassador for Capezio and was also named ambassador to the Tap Legacy Foundation co-founded by Gregory Hines and Andrew Nemr.

Matt has continued his education at the prestigious Dance Life Retreat Center in Norton, MA with renowned instructors Kaelyn Gray, Thelma Goldberg, Drew Burgess and Rhee Gold. In addition, he has trained under instructors such as, Dianne Walker, Gregg Russell, Dorothy Wasserman, Danny Gardner, Robert Burden Jr. Andrew Nemr, Michelle Dorrance, Karen Calloway Williams, Sarah Reich, Karen Pauro, Christopher Erk, Anthony LoCascio And Debbie Gatto, who he considers his mentor.

Matt along his students have performed in numerous parades and events including, the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade, Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington DC and Miss America’s show us your shoes parade on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

Who are you, and why do you support O’Mara Sprung Floors?

My name is Matt Elliott, I support O’Mara Sprung Floors because of the quality and craftsmanship of their product.

What do you love?

Above all I love my family, we are very close and my parents are such incredible role models. I love my soon to be wife who is incredible supportive, and I absolutely love to tap dance.

Why do you dance?

Tap dance gives me the creative outlet that was missing in my life. Becoming a teacher and choreographer has given me the opportunity to share my gift with thousands of students over the years and hopefully it has made an impact in their lives.

Why do you choose to dance on O’Mara Sprung Floors?

O’Mara Sprung Floors are pure quality, dancing on a sprung floor is a healthy necessity to help protect dancers from unneces- sary injury that a non sprung floor could ultimately cause.

How would you like the world to know you?

I think I would want the world to know me as a humble person. A family man who is always supportive of my peers and our tap family. Someone who has found his gift in life and continues to develop it and share it with as many people as possible.

Career highlights thus far:

My career has given me such amazing opportunities, being named as an ambassador to the Tap Legacy Foundation co founded by the late Gregory Hines ranks as one of my favorites. I have also been asked to teach at my first festival in 2020.
