There’s nothing quite like walking into a ballet studio—mirrors all around, barres along the walls, and flooring perfect for practice and performances. While this atmosphere can’t be replaced, recent pandemic lockdowns made us all realize that the show must go on somehow.
An excellent solution when you can’t make it to the ballet studio, for whatever reason, is the portable or mobile ballet dance floor. By having the most crucial piece of the studio available at all times, you can continue your routine when and where you please.
O’Mara Sprung Floors produces high-quality, long-lasting portable dance floors for dancers and athletes looking to continue their craft at home or on the road. You can browse our full line of dance floors to find the perfect match for your needs.
Let’s learn more about portable ballet dance floors and how they can benefit you.
What Is a Portable Ballet Dance Floor?
A portable ballet dance floor is just what it sounds like—a portion of a standard ballet floor that can be moved easily to wherever you need it. The portability of these dance floors makes them ideal for dancers and studios alike, as they provide flexibility and versatility without compromising on quality.
Portable ballet dance floors can come in various sizes. For instance, we manufacture several sizes of mobile ballet dance floors:
- 3′ x 4′ Sprung Vinyl Ballet Dance Floor
- 4′ x 4′ SoftShoe Ash Dance Floor
- 4′ x 6′ SoftShoe Ash Dance Floor
- 4′ x 8′ SoftShoe Ash Dance Floor
We also manufacture larger sizes of portable ballet floors, which take only a little more effort to move and store than our smaller sizes. These floors start at 6’ x 8’ and can be made as large as you need, up to the size of a stage or studio. The different flooring types provide various features based on your dancing needs.
Sprung Vinyl Ballet Dance Floor
Our singular piece dance floor is constructed from raw birch with vinyl ballet floor pre-attached. The design protects your joints and is slip-resistant, making it perfect for ballet or any other type of dance style.
A significant advantage of this vinyl-topped sprung floor for ballet is you can practice your pointe work without rosin. Plus, all of our portable practice floors come with handles pre-attached, making them easy to move. The single-piece floor is easy to transport in the car or around the house since it weighs only 34 pounds.
SoftShoe Ash Dance Floor
Another option for practicing your ballet moves anywhere is the O’Mara softshoe ash dance floor. You can opt for the 4′ x 4′ size, consisting of two 2′ x 4′ panels, or expand it by adding another panel or two to create a 4′ x 6′ or 4’ x 8’ dance space, respectively. The panels are made of ash wood and include a clamp and cable set to secure them together safely.
This type of portable ballet dance floor is great for studios, gymnasiums, or classrooms and is highly versatile as you can use it for almost every dance style except tap. The floor is pre-finished with ProLine Urethane, making it highly slip-resistant and durable.
Advantages of a Portable Ballet Dance Floor at Home
Having a portable ballet dance floor at home offers some significant advantages.
Durability
While it may look graceful and elegant, ballet is a highly demanding art form that takes its toll on the body. Anytime you’re practicing, whether it’s for a few minutes or a few hours, you need the right kind of floor at your feet to ensure you don’t do your body damage. O’Mara’s dance floors are built with this in mind, as they provide the right balance between durability and functionality for dancers.
Grip
Staying safe while dancing is essential, regardless of where you’re practicing. Using any floor type could put you at risk of slipping and falling. O’Mara uses ProLine Urethane to pre-finish all of our portable wood ballet dance floors, ensuring your feet can move about as you want them to without the fear of losing your grip.
Convenience
The most beneficial aspect of a portable ballet dance floor is its convenience. You can set up your dance floor quickly and easily, wherever you have enough space. This portability allows dancers to practice at home or wherever life takes them.
Important Information to Keep in Mind
Portable dance floors can open up many opportunities outside of a dance studio that would otherwise be unavailable to dancers. However, every user should keep in mind some crucial aspects of owning a portable ballet dance floor.
Storage
It’s important to remember that you’ll want to have a place to safely store and protect your dance floor when it is not in use. Leaving it out for people to walk on may cause damage, and improperly storing it could impact its longevity. If your dance floor doesn’t have its own dedicated space or corner where no one will walk across it with street shoes on, good options for at-home storage include sliding it under a bed or in leaning the dance floor panels upright in a closet where the floor will stay safe and dry.
Maintenance
It’s essential to keep your dance floor clean and dry. For this reason, we do not advise you to use your O’Mara portable ballet dance floor outdoors. If the board gets wet, dry it immediately and thoroughly. To keep the floor clean, sweep the floor gently then use a water-dampened towel to wipe away any debris, making sure no water seeps between the floor’s seams. You can also vacuum the floor carefully, as long as the vacuum does not have the potential to scuff or scrape the floor.
